Calm before the mildly disturbing weather

Some work, some waiting, and some stuff to read.

After a few misses with the printed proofs for One Day Lucky, I have a surreally delightful hard copy in my hand. The cover art looks amazing (thanks Dave Law) and I am happy with the overall design after my wife/creative director pointed out a few changes that made a massive difference to the title layout. I've now ordered a case of books so for those of you that are waiting for a physical copy, it will be on the way to you soon.

In-between bouts of cursing at the screen trying to get the proof layout correct, I've also finished up another novella. Unlike Roller Dogs, this is entirely a prequel, following the mercenary Hux as he makes his way towards San Francisco. It will be a short read, with plenty to cement Hux as the unluckiest mercenary alive as he gets suckered into a really crappy job and, of course, there's a Stop N' Kwik involved (still blows my mind that there is not an actual store with that name). I don't know that it will be done and ready before One Day Lucky comes out, but as soon as it has been edited and a proper cover is done, I'll share it with you all. For now, here is the dodgy placeholder cover I created myself which features the mascot for the Mulez app that Hux uses to find mercenary gigs.

I can't wait to see what Dave Law comes up with for this one.

And, an email from an author wouldn't be complete without a pitch for something. In this case, it's a pitch for you to check out some other books that you might like, given you're here hanging out with me. Some dystopian offerings (I've already grabbed The Post-Apocalyptic Independent Author), plus some more traditional fantasy/scifi (I am not super into fantasy but I still downloaded Immortal of the Saltless Sea just based on the cover). As with most (all) things, I don't know what I am doing here so I probably signed up for more of these swaps with other authors than I should have, but there are some pretty cool books/novellas in there that you can grab for free.

Thanks,

Dave

Needle in the dumpster I was potentially going to hold off on sharing this new batch of available books, but that was before I saw that Vastland is available. I read this as a serial on Substack earlier in the year and it was great. It was like if you stripped all the '90s scifi camp out of Total Recall and left yourself with just the story that keeps you guessing which version of reality is real, and then added three more layers of reality that all might also be real and might not. It's...

Horrible concept art for the cover of One Day Lucky

Navigating an increasingly artificial world Writing sometimes feels like it's 90% reading. You read to keep current in your genre, you read outside your genre to experience different ways of telling stories, and then you read and re-read your own work in multiple rounds of editing. Reading in-genre has been the hardest for me. I've already read all the big ones. All the Gibson and Stephenson, and all the newer entries like Napper as well. There just aren't that many cyberpunk books available...

One Day Lucky can now be used to physically assault people A very heavy box showed up at my house this week. It was one thing to have the proof copy in my hands, but now I have an actual stack of One Day Lucky sitting on my desk. I was going to set them all up like a little bookstore shelf while I prepped the goodies that will be tucked into the boxes with them when I send them out next week, but that just made me realize that this is all even stranger than just having a copy of my own book....
